Scientific explanation of Karnavedhana Sanskar (Pierceing of Child's Ear )

Category: Science in Ancient texts (Hindu Sanskar)

Hi Beautiful and Peaceful Souls,

In the series of blogs about sixteen sanskars, after discussing Nishkraman (https://thepureknowledge.blogspot.com/2020/08/nishkraman-sanskar-outing-ceremony-of.html), Annaprashan (https://thepureknowledge.blogspot.com/2020/08/scientific-explanation-of-annaprashan.html and Mundan sanskar (https://thepureknowledge.blogspot.com/2020/08/scientific-explanation-of.html) in my previous blogs, today I will discuss about Karnavedhana sanskar.

What is Karnavedhana Sanskar?

Karnavadhana is one of the important sanskar mentioned in Hindu tradition which has been lost today. Ayurvedic scholars viz., Sushruta, Charaka, Kashayapa and Vagbhatta explained this sanskar in their respective texts. According to Sushruta and so as Charaka and Vagbhatta, this sanskar is performed for Raksha (protection) and Abhushana (Ornamental) purpose. Karnavedhana sanskar is performed on an auspicious muhurta between 3rd to 8th month of child's birth according to different Ayurveda Acharya  and Gruhya sutras.

In this sanskar, the child is placed in the lap of male attendant who consoles the child and keeps him/her engaged with toys. Meanwhile, the physician pulls the ear with his left hand and pierce in the middle of Karnapeetha with his right hand slowly and evenly by a needle or awl. Karnapeetha is the area slightly towards cheeks, where skin is thinner and this pierced position has maximum translucency from the light source.

In the male child, the right ear should be pierced first while in female child, first piercing should be done in the left ear. This is followed by insertion of pichuvarti (cotton wick soaked in medicine) (13). This process is usually performed on an auspicious day, specially in winter season, to reduce the chances of infection. It is believed that the points where ear is pierced are specific points that coincide with masculine and feminine halves of a person based on respective gender. The right half of the body is masculine side and the left side is feminine. Ancient physicians used to treat diseases of feminine organs by putting earrings in the left ear and diseases of male organs via the right ear. The concept of wearing earring in right and left ear is based on yogic energic anatomy of human body. In this, the right side of body is regulated by Pingla or Solar Nadi, which governs the more masculine aspects of our personality. The same way, left side of body is governed by Ida or Lunar Nadi, which controls the feminine aspect of our personality.

Karnavedhana is a form of acupuncture. In acupuncture, a very thin needle is inserted to various depths through a person's skin at specific points on the body. Research suggests that it can help to relieve pain and bring back the balance in energy flow. Acupuncture points are seen as places where nerves, muscles and connective tissue can be stimulated. The stimulation increases blood flow viz-a-viz triggering the activity of the body’s natural painkillers. Modern research has demonstrated the effects of acupuncture on the nervous, endocrine, immune, cardiovascular and digestive system (10,11).

Scientific Explanation of Karnavedhana Sanskar

1. Injury produced by piercing the ear may initiate the antigen-antibody reaction providing active immunity to the child. This act also activates the immune mechanism to bring secondary immunity for any other potential infection due to injury.

A scientific report has demonstrated that the massive redistribution of immune cells throughout the body is orchestrated by three hormones released by the adrenal glands, in different amounts and at different times, in response to the stress inducing event (10). The norepinephrine is released early and is primarily involved in mobilizing all major immune-cell types; monocytes, neutrophils and lymphocytes into the blood. Epinephrine, also released early, mobilized monocytes and neutrophils into the blood, while nudging lymphocytes out into "battlefield" destinations such as skin. Corticosterone, released somewhat later, causes virtually all immune cell types to head out of circulation to the "battlefields". The overall effect of these movements is to bolster immune readiness.

Therefore, Ear piercing is a quick procedure, which probably triggers the same cascade of actions as described by Dr. Dhabhar of Stanford University (14). Any sort of mechanical trauma and inert material starts antigen-antibody reaction in the body. Therefore, ear piercing probably initiates antigen–antibody reaction in the body and by doing so keeps body’s immunity ready against opportunistic infections.

Friends, before discussing second point, I want to introduce you all with the term "Auriculotherapy". It is also called auricular therapy, ear acupuncture and auriculo acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine based on the idea that ear is a micro system, which reflects the entire body, represented on the auricle, the outer portion of the ear (external ear or pinna)

So, ear lobe which is part of ear auricle is made up of strong aerolar and adipose tissue, which is normally smooth but shows creases. Thus, ear lobe consist of tissues rather than cartilages like rest of the ear, they have large blood supply. It contains many nerve endings and thus this blood supply is thought to be for helping us maintain our balance. According to Ayurveda, energy or meridian or pressure points in our ears are connected to organs and whole body, and that various parts of the ear are linked to other particular body parts.

2. Therefore, it is assumed that ear piercing improves the listening capacity and eye sight of child. This rite is thus intended to open inner ears of child to hear sacred sounds. A scientific reports showed that the position where ear is pierced has master sensorial point which controls cerebral cortex area of parietal (control sensory information from various parts of body), occipital (visual recognition and visual attention), and temporal (recognition of auditory stimuli, verbal and visual memory) lobe (16)

3. This sanskar is also responsible for intellectual development of child, that's why it is necessary to perform this sanskar before Upanayan sanskar (Sending the child to Gurukul for study). The right ear lobe corresponds to the left brain while left ear lobe corresponds to the right brain. Nerves in the ear are linked with various nerve centers in the brain and each sends different neurological pathway down the spinal cord, finally reaching to different neurons around the body and affecting different body parts. Thus, the ears act as powerful acupuncture pressure points that have a direct connection to the brain.  Principles of acupressure therapy also claim that when these meridian points are stimulated, it helps in healthy and quick development of brain. A scientific report showed that the position where ear is pierced has master cerebral point which is associated with prefrontal lobe of the brain. Prefrontal cortex is cerebral cortex covering the front part of frontal lobe. It is involved functions of memory, attention, flexibility, planning, problem solving and decision making (16).  I am amazed, how our ancestors knew all these things making sanskar compulsory for all.

4. According to Ayurveda, the lobe of ear has also an important point for reproductive health. So, piercing of ear maintains regularity in menstrual cycle in women and increases sperm count in men. The Father of Western Medicine, Hippocrates, wrote about ear piercings as a remedy and treatment for menstrual problems and he was backed by Galen.

5. The ear lobe also has a point to improve digestion and thus reduces the chances of obesity (17). Karnavedhana stimulates vagus nerve, which is associated with digestive tract hence helps in increasing appetite which is important for child's growth (10).

6. It is recommended to wear metal like gold or copper in the ear because it helps in maintaining the flow of electric current (energy) in the body. In ancient times, gold ear rings were recommended if there is deficiency in energy while silver ear rings were used if there is excess of energy flow. Gemstones were embedded in earrings for their therapeutic effects.

7. Auricular acupuncture prevents from various diseases such as paralysis, hysteria, hernia, anxiety, nervousness, insomnia (18)obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and many more.

According to microsystem of auricular acupuncture, we can nearly treat the whole body by treating respective points on the external ear or auricle. This means whole body is projected on to the auricle or an other way of putting it is, the ear mirrors the whole body or reflex the image of it. Acupuncture improves body’s functions and promotes the natural healing process by stimulating specific anatomical sites. A word of caution, according to Ayurveda, ear piercing done at a wrong place can have adverse effects on body.

I hope, this blog helps you to understand that Karnavedhana sanskar is purely a scientific practice backed by modern science.

Hope, you like it

Your's Sincerely

Scientific Explanation of Mundan/Chudakarana (First Time Shaving of Child's Hair) Sanskar

Category: Science in Ancient texts (Hindu Sanskar)

Hi Beautiful & Peaceful Souls,

In this series of blogs about sixteen sanskars, after discussing Nishkraman (https://thepureknowledge.blogspot.com/2020/08/nishkraman-sanskar-outing-ceremony-of.html) and Annaprashan  sanskar in my previous blogs,(https://thepureknowledge.blogspot.com/2020/08/scientific-explanation-of-annaprashan.html)  today I will discuss Mundan/Chudakarana sanskar.

What is Mundan/Chudakarana Sanskar (Tonsuring of Hair First Time)?

चूडाकर्म द्विजातीनां सर्वेषामेव धर्मतः

प्रथमेSब्दे तृतीये वा कर्तव्यं श्रुतिचोदनात ||

According to Vishudh Manusmriti, it involves shaving of head of child for the first time after birth. This sanskar should be performed at the end of 1st year and before the end of 3rd year of child birth (13)

It is best to perform this sanskar in 3rd year because child's scalp is very tender before this time. The top of head is called fontanelle, is especially soft because the skull bones do not get fully knitted together till the age of 3 years. Till then, the birth hair give protection to the skull.

As per this ritual, hair of child are divided into two parts, a) Shikha (Tuft of hair), the part which is kept intact and b) the remaining hair which are removed from head with chant of mantras. These hair is then kept on seat of straws and are sanctified with Gaumutra. They are buried beneath the land either on bank of river Ganga or in Gaushala. After this, child's head is washed with holy water. A paste of turmeric and sandalwood is applied to head to heal the cut, if any.

Scientific Aspects of Mundan Sanskar:

1. The purpose of Mundan sanskar is piety, intellectual development and beauty. This is to enhance longevity, purity and beauty. Since child remains in womb till nine months this makes child's hair impure and can lead to scalp infection. Shaving is good to prevent certain skin problems like cradle cap, which is later converted into seborrheic dermatitis due to collection to sweat in scalp area by obstructing the sweat glands. If untreated, this becomes predisposing factor for psoriasis also (8).

Moreover, natural growth of hair on baby's head is uneven, so, after shaving, child will have even growth. There is a myth that shaving head can lead to thickness of here but there are no scientific evidences that proved that shaving give thick hair (10).

2. Another reason to perform this sanskar is, the teething process starts from 1st to 3rd year. During this process, child experiences heavy head, heat, headache, swollen gums, drool, loss motions, conjunctivitis. All these things affect child's head making him irritated and aggressive. So, this sanskar  helps to keep child's head cool and light.

3. After shaving the head, the size and shape of head should be documented carefully for normal or abnormal findings. Detection of abnormalities like craniocynostosis (a congenital defect in which bones in baby's skull join too early even before baby's brain is fully formed), wide sutures, microcephaly (child's head is smaller than normal), macrocephaly (overly large head), elevated or depressed fontanelle (soft spot on baby's head where skull bones have not fused together). Palpation of scalp carefully may also reveal cranial defects or craniotabes.

4. At one year of age, infant develops milestones such as, walking without support, mature pincer grasp, able to turn pages of book and scribble, playing simple ball games and first molar eruption. So, all these activities can be monitored in case this sanskar is done after one year of child's birth.

5. Acharya Kashyapa explained Mundan as the first line of treatment. That time conforms diagnosis of Rickets in child.

Why Shikha is left at the back of child's head in this sanskar?

Acharya Sushruta opines that Shikha (special arrangement of hair on top of scalp which is left during Mundan sanskar) is the site of Sira (vessels) and Sandhi (Sutures: fibrous joints connecting bones of skull) and hair acts as protective layer for these. Shikha also acts as center point for receiving the energy from environment. The small portion of hair that hangs on behind our head applies little pressure on our brain that helps to improve concentration, memory and mind control. The awareness and alertness in body is controlled by center of brain which is at the place where shikha is kept.

According to Acharya Sushruta, this spot on head is the point of nexus of all the nerves and shikha helps in protecting this spot. Below this spot occurs Brahmarandhra where Sushumna nerve arrives from the lower part of the body to the brain.  Brahmarandhra is the highest chakra (sahashara chakra also known as seventh or Crown Chakra) which is the center of wisdom. Shikha helps in boosting this center which can enhance our capability to experience the mystery of this universe. It is the place considered to be an opening where our soul connects with macrocosm. Crown chakra is associated with pineal gland which produces melatonin, a hormone that affects other glands in the endocrine system. This mirrors the relationship and interaction of crown chakra with other chakras.

Friends, I know some people perform mundan ceremony in a temple. I am no one to suggest whether it is right or wrong but, in my opinion it is not hygienic to perform mundan ceremony inside the temple premise and leave child's dirty hair there only. Temple is a place to attain purity of mind and thoughts. Therefore, in my opinion, it should be done outside the temple and child's hair should be buried under the soil near river after disinfecting them properly.

Scientific Explanation of Annaprashan Sanskar

Category: Science in Ancient texts (Hindu Sanskar)

 Hi Beautiful and Peaceful Souls,

As I promised that I will share details about all 16 sanskars of Indian culture on the basis of scientific facts. So, today, I will talk about the another sanskar "Annaprashan Sanskar".

चतुर्थे मासि कर्तव्यं शिशोर्निष्क्रमणं गृहात् |
षष्ठेSन्नप्राशनं मासि यद्वेष्टं मङ्गलं कुले || (31)

What is Annaprashan Sanskar?

When the child takes first ever solid food or cereals, the sanskar is called the Annaprashan sanskar. It is performed at the 6th month from the date of birth of baby. According to the ancient texts, only pure (sattvik) and nutritious food contributes to a healthy body, mind, intellect and soul of human being. Therefore, the "khir" or "Sweet" is offered to child in this sanskar after performing yagya on an auspicious day.

Why Annaprashan Sanskar is performed at the age of 6 months?

We know that human milk consists of macro nutrients (water, carbohydrate, lipid, protein, bio-active component and micro nutrients (Vitamins and Minerals). So, it is not merely nutrition but also contains a variety of factors with medicinal properties that have profound role in infant survival and health. The concentration of these macro and micro nutrients change during different stages of lactation. For example, as per a scientific report (4), the mother who breastfeed up to 12 months has more carbohydrate and less fat and protein in her milk while the mother who breastfeed longer than 18 months has comparatively less carbohydrate and more fat and protein in milk. This may be the reason that child who get breastfed for longer period tend to have a fatty body and is less energetic.

Another scientific report (5) stated that the milk's micro nutrients such as iron, zinc and copper are higher in colostrum but declines significantly starting second week to 4-7 months postpartum. As per another scientific report (6), breast milk alone becomes insufficient to meet an infant's vitamins B-6 requirements after 6 months of birth. In addition to this, Vitamin D, E, and K  along with iron in breast milk are present in low concentrations than required for a growing baby. Copper, zinc, calcium, and phosphorous concentration in breast milk also starts declining after 6 months of lactation.

It can be concluded that after the age of 6 months, breast milk alone is not sufficient to fulfill the nutrition and energy requirement of a growing child. As the infancy proceeds calorific requirement of baby increases due to increased activity and rapid growth. So, providing high calorific food along with breast milk is essential. Thus, for the healthy development of body and mind, child needs food which is high in nutrients and energy (Prana).

A child who does not consume solid food after the age of 6 months suffers from a number of ailments. For example, the prolonged breast feeding alone may lead to calcium deficiency disorders like rickets and scurvy in child. Now the question arises how the child should get nutrition then? Don't worry because it is the law of nature and nature is so grateful to us that if one way is blocked then many another open up. Therefore, the eruption of teeth starts at the age of 6 months and the digestive system of child becomes ready with its enzymatic activity to digest complex food substances by this time. Now the question is what should we give to eat to child? Above, I have mentioned that "Kheer" should be given to child. It is mixture of boiled rice, curd, honey and Ghee served in silver bowl

Scientific Logic Behind Giving "Kheer" in Annaprashan Sanskar

We know that the microbiota associated with mother's breast milk contributes to create "initial" intestinal microbiota of infants. It introduces beneficial microbes in the gut of child which helps in digestion of milk, and give protection from infections. A Scientific study (22) showed that children who breastfed for at least six months have more beneficial microbes such as Bifidobacteria than those who are bottle-fed.

So, Curd used in above mixture acts as probiotic (live beneficial bacteria) as after Ananaprashan sanskar, the breastfeeding will be reduced. So, probiotic adds beneficial bacteria to digest complex food to prevent stomach distress. In addition to this, Honey used in this mixture will act as probiotic as well as prebiotic (these substances come from carbohydrates (fiber) that humans cannot digest, thus these act as food for the beneficial bacteria in gut and helps in their proliferation). However, now-a-days, honey is  not considered safe for consumption for children below the age of 12 months as raw honey can cause infant botulism. A contradicting scientific report (26) however stated that 90% cases of botulism occur in children younger than 6 months. So, our ancestors were wise enough to know when honey should be given to child!!

Similarly, Ghee is a rich source of Vitamin A and Vitamin E hence, this acts as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. In addition to this, little Ghee helps in digestion and keeps stomach troubles at bay. Ghee is a good source of energy and helps in brain development (as it contains DHA, Docosa Hexaeonic Acid, a fatty acid which plays a crucial role in neuro development), weight gain, immunity and eyesight. And finally, boiled rice is used in this mixture because rice is easy to digest (low in fiber) and unlike gluten in wheat, does not trigger an allergic reaction. So, it is well tolerated by babies who are transitioning from breast milk to solid food. Moreover, rice is the greatest source of energy for a child. The reason Silver metal  is used to serve this food is because it is known to have anti-microbial and anti-viral properties (18). This in turn helps the child  to avoid any encounter harmful bacteria/viruses.

Should we discontinue breast milk completely immediately after this sanskar?

The answer is No. If we completely discontinue feeding breast milk, baby's stomach will get upset. The solid food should be offered to child gradually with a simultaneous  gradual withdrawal of breast milk. As, mentioned above that the first meal offered to infant should be easy to digest, light and soft. We can also give fruit juices as these are source of vitamins and minerals especially vitamin C and as discussed the quantity of Vitamin C in breast milk becomes insufficient than required. So, for healthy teeth, fruit juices rich in Vitamin C are recommended. Vitamin C also helps in absorption of iron along with other micro nutrients. Moreover, fruits juices fulfill the requirement of other vitamins and minerals which become deficit in breast milk. Moreover, fruits which can easily mashed up should give to child at the early stage of giving solid food, this is known as Phalaprashan sanskar. Because, fruits require little digestion for adequate absorption and utilization and give abundance of vitamins, minerals, energy and water to child.

Is Annaprashan Sanskar Good for Mother?

In this blog, so far we have discussed a lot about the importance of Annaprashan sanskar for a child's growth and development. However, you may ask. does it have any effect on mother's health? If yes, than whether it is good or bad? So the good part is, it is designed not only to keep a child healthy but also focuses on mother's health. Let me explain, a scientific review (17) stated that the bone loss in mothers, who breast feed for up to 6 months, stops with in  6 months of delivery and reaches to baseline level in just another 6 months. In contrast, they found that if lactation continues for 12 months, bone mass does not reach to baseline level leading to calcium deficiency in mother. So, it can be concluded that continuing regular breast feeding even post 6 months of delivery can make the bones of mother weak.

Another significance of Annaprashan ceremony is, it can also be used as a time for assessment of developmental milestones in child viz., rolling over, sitting with own support, stranger emotions and monosyllabic speech (pa, ba, da).

There is quote in India, "Our physique, mind, intellect and soul are what we eat "

Hope you like it,

Your's Sincerely

Scientific Explanation of Nishkraman Sanskar (Outing Ceremony Of Baby for First Time)

Category: Science in Ancient texts (Hindu Sanskar)

Hi Beautiful and Peaceful Souls,

We all have heard about Sanatan Sanskriti but have you ever wondered what is actually Sanatan Sanskriti?

By definition, It is the way of living life on earth by maintaining a balance with nature and rise ourselves to get physical, mental and spiritual wealth. The meaning of Sanskrit itself is, one which purifies, improves, and upgrade.

Our ancient language is known as Sanskrit because it helps in developing the human race. Our Indian civilization is known as Sanskriti (culture) because it follows particular set of rules beneficial for society, nature and us. There are rules for language, food habits, attire, behavior towards society and nature, this plays important role for the mankind. We have become cultured because we follow these set of rules called Sanskars (Sacrament of life). These Sanskars are responsible for the upgradation of personal (physical, mental and spiritual), family, religious and social life of humans. Our ancestors were wise enough and therefore created these Sanskars  as these Sanskars help a person get involved in preserving nature and human race.

Sanskars which can performed in the form of different rituals, ceremonies and actions (such as worship, festivals, fasting, pilgrimage, deity darshan, donation, yagya, recitation of mantra, hymns and divine accents, yoga, meditation and action towards nature) raise our consciousness and develop us as a purified and wiser human. With the help of gained knowledge, we perform sattvic (pure) actions influenced purely by soul and behave with responsibility towards ourself, society and nature. This helps us to think always in the direction of benefiting the mankind throughout our life. This in turn helps us to enlighten and achieve the ultimate purpose of human birth i.e., liberation. Actually, sanskar done at different stages of life reminds us about this ultimate purpose of life right from the beginning when we enter in the womb so that we do not get stuck in materialistic world. Without Sanskars, human will behave as "Demon". Our ancestors were well aware of this and therefore, created Sanskars for every stage of life starting from birth till death. With time, though these Sanskars have either changed or diminished but the purpose always remains the welfare of nature and mankind. The true purpose of human birth is to purify our-self,  perform good deeds, experience and distribute happiness.

Now, you may question on how sanskars help  in achieving liberation? Let us try to understand this.

Vedic civilization is based on sanskars which is the sum  total of 3 things:

1. The impressions from actions of previous births in causal body.
2. Genetics of parents and family we are born in.
3. Environment we live in, ever since birth

The impressions of our actions (karmas) done in past lives get accumulated as sanskars and act as the casual body (seed) for present life. The karmas (good or bad) of present life will be casual body for next life. These will be responsible for body and mind of next life and thus karma of next life. It means, human being is free to do any karma but has to suffer or enjoy the outcome of that karma either in present life or in future lives. Therefore, there is a need to eradicate the impressions of bad karma from soul to become a better individual. An individual who possess good physical, mental and spiritual health. The system of 16 sanskars act as a road map to evolve a person to become better for society.

In ancient times, the expecting mother were sent either to the ashram or in the environment which has a positive impact on physical and mental state of mother. This helped eradicating the bad impressions of karma of many of previous birth even before soul takes the form of gross body. This was done with the help of Sanskars performed before conception as well as prenatal Sanskars. It means the good sanskars of parents are directly responsible for the accumulation of good sanskars in child leading to a healthy body and mind. This way, parents are able to produce a child which is an asset for the ideal society.

However, today, people believe that the physical and mental attributes of child is an outcome of
A) heredity (Heredity is the term used for genetic heritage we receive by our biological traits) and
B) the environment they are living in.

It is true but today, we have very less or no knowledge about preconception and prenatal sanskars. This practice has lead to the lost of chance of eradicating the impressions of bad karma before soul takes the form of gross body in the womb.

Number of sanskaras vary in different Hindu religious texts such as Grihya sutra (18-21).  Gautam Smriti and Maharishi Angira explained about 40 and 25 Sanskars, respectively. Vyas and Manu smriti explains about 16 Sanskars each to be performed in a fix series.

These are Garbhadhan (Conception), Punsavana, Simantonayana (Baby shower ceremony), Jatakarma (Birth rituals), Naamkaran (Naming ceremony), Nishkramana (Outing ceremony), Annaprashana (Feeding ceremony), Mundan (Shaving of head), Upanayana (Sacred thread ceremony), Vedarambh (Beginning of vedic study), Keshanta, Smavartana (End of studentship), Vivaha (Marriage ceremony), Vanprastha (Renouncing the householder's life), Sanyas (Leading of life of monk), Antyeshti  (Death ritual) Sanskars.

We will study these 16 sanskars one by one, I will start with Nishkraman Sanskar today.

Scientific Explanation of Nishkraman Sanskar

It is placed at sixth place in shodash (16) sanskaras. It is the Sacrament of first outing or outing ceremony of baby. The baby is taken out to a place for pure and fresh air. This place should not be crowded to avoid the risk of air borne diseases, though baby develops good immunity till this time. We already know that pure and fresh air increases the level of prana in body and makes us healthy. Similarly, this sanskar is the introduction of child to beautiful nature and to have a feel of it. Pure air filled with solar prana is really necessary for the development of body and mind. To keep child at home for more than 4 months, without performing this sanskar, has a bad impact on baby's health. It has been seen observed that babies always ask us to take them out reason being, they enjoy the company of nature.

According to Kashyapa and Ashtanga Sangrah, in the fourth month of birth, the baby should be given a bath, adorned, wear new clean clothes, possess mustard, honey, Grihta (Ghee) or Gud-chana (Mixture of jaggery and roasted chana) along with dhatri (nurse) should be taken out of house, to a temple. This sanskar is done by performing Yagya with the recitation of mantra.

This process (Sanskara) is an important observation tool for developmental milestones of baby. Bathing the baby is a good time to check any deformity by vaidya. By the end of 4th month child develops head control and thus the brain development, perfect motor or sense organs and muscles coordination can be checked during this sanskar. For example, if everything is fine then baby will react to the sound of bell in temple by turning head around and lifting it with complete control. This shows baby's good hearing capacity. By seeing sun and moon, pupillary reaction of child can be observed. The persistence of grasping, placing, stepping, rooting, tonic and Moro's reflexes gives the indication of cerebral palsy. Moreover, as the child meets unknown people its reaction in the form of smile, laugh, fear, anxiety or curiosity can be observed with the help of this sanskar. We can say that, baby start showing emotions such as recognition of mother, and interest in external environment in the 4th month after birth.

Till three months, baby remains sensitive to strong sun and wind. S(He) can suffer from heat stroke and hypothermia. Therefore, baby is taken out of the home for first time only after 3rd month.  It is done to enhance the age and physical and mental development of child.  Moreover, exposing him/her to sunlight in the morning, accelerates the synthesis of Vitamin D. Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption in the gut and maintains adequate serum calcium and phosphate concentrations to enable normal mineralization of bones to promote bone and teeth health. Sunlight is also responsible for better immunity and thus makes baby's body strong.

Additionally, baby's biological clock sets up after this day/Sanskara. My previous blog (https://thepureknowledge.blogspot.com/2020/07/waking-up-early-morning-tradition.html) explains how morning light is responsible to recharge biological clock. Sunlight is responsible for the increase in serotonin and inhibition of melatonin hormone which makes child happy and energetic.  In addition of this, sunlight helps to breakdown bilirubin, a natural compound of catabolic pathway, that can be processed easily by child's lever.

We know that the whole life on this earth is controlled by two planetary bodies Moon and Sun. The flow of heat energy in the body is sign of life and c
old body is the indication of death.  Solar energy (Sun) gives life. Sun (Masculine energy) is all about taking actions, moving forward and going for our desires. The reason for these actions is the production of Serotonin and disappearance of Melatonin along with other products controlled by sunlight. The sun's blessings are taken so that child's character becomes bright and mighty as Sun.

Moon (feminine energy) encourages us to be remain calm and at rest. It is also responsible for the production of Serotonin
hormone (feel good hormone) and other products. Moon reflects the light of sun without being aggravating and has soothing impact on body and mind. It cools down excess heat, anger and Pitta Dosha related problems. Moon light being reflected sun light can boost vitamin D level too. Moon's blessings are taken so that child is bestowed with calm and serene qualities similar to that of moon.

We already know that there should be a balance between work and rest. Both actions in excess ruin our health. Similarly, Sun and Moon made balance on this earth for the survival of its habitants.

Hope you all, will be happy to know the science behind the sanskars of Indian civilization. I hope, you will understand the importance of sanskars and start following these lost sanskars.

Sanskars only fill divinity in the human body who otherwise is an uncultured being.
