Waking Up Early Morning: A Tradition Backed By Science

Category: Ayurveda

Hi Beautiful and Peaceful Souls,

Our parents always told us to get up and study early morning rather than late night. However, when we inquired for the reason behind this, they simply said "it is good for you". So, today, I am going to discuss about the science behind it both on the basis of ancient and modern school of thought. We all know the proverb "Early to Bed Early to Rise Make a Man Healthy, Wealthy and Wise" but how many of us know that in Ashtanga Hridyam, it has been mentioned that, we should always get up early morning (Brahma Muhurta) for healthy, long and peaceful life.

First of all, let us try to understand what is Brahma Muhurta?

Brahma Muhurta is the period (Muhurta) of day 96 minutes before sunrise i.e., One hour Thirty Six minutes before sunrise. It is Known as "The Creator's Hour"  or "Time of Brahma". Brahma Muhurta is the specific time at which the biological clock of human beings gets recharged and thus maintains its rhythm and pattern day long. According to Vishudh Manusmriti, each Muhurta lasts for 48 minutes, and therefore, the Brahma Muhurta begins 96 minutes before sunrise and ends 48 minutes before sunrise. For example, if the sunrises at 6 a.m. on a particular day at particular location, then the Brahma Muhurta starts at 4.24 a.m. and lasts till 5.12 a.m.  Since the time of sunrise varies each day depending on geographic location and time of year, thus the time of Brahma Muhurta also varies.

Ayurveda says, aligning our microcosm with macrocosm is the method for healthy and long life with delayed ageing. At this point in time, the atmosphere remains free from worldly feelings and negative vibrations. Since devotees pray God and Yogis do meditation hence their mental rays (positive vibrations) pervade all over the world and benefits it. As you would be aware that pattern of vibrations is responsible for particular forms and even scientists have agreed that the world is a string of vibrational energy. All manifestations in our life are because vibrations of our thoughts match with theirs. This means our pure and positive thoughts has a positive impact on our as well as others life. Therefore, there is always a need for us to increase our sattva quality by living sattvic life. After a good night sleep, we are more relaxed and at peace and this results in dominance of sattva guna in us. So, this period has presence of more sattva (purity) in the atmosphere and in us.

Ancient people were well aware that their ultimate goal is to achieve liberation, there is a need to live a simple life free from desires and distractions. They also knew that our body tune in much easily with nature at this time of day and thus stays at peace and stillness, making it more alert to gain ultimate knowledge (Brahma Gyan). So, they always used to get up at Brahma Muruta and devote their time for the progress of their soul. Moreover, Sushmana naadi flows readily at this time (when breathing occurs through both the nostrils then it is an indication that Sushmuna nadi is working) and thus meditation occurs effortlessly. Therefore, Brahma Muruta is considered an auspicious time for practicing Yoga and Meditation, and for worship and gaining knowledge.

Brahma Muhurta According to Ayurveda

Different Doshas dominate at different time frames of the day. The time of last part of night i.e., between 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. is dominated by Vata Dosha therefore, Brahma Muhurta occurs during Vata stage of day. Vata Dosha is responsible for movement and communication either in macrocosm or in microcosm (https://thepureknowledge.blogspot.com/2020/07/understanding-basic-principles-of.html) i.e., Vata governs the movement of body and mind such as flow of breath, pulsations of heart and contractions of muscles and cellular mobility and communication (Nervous system and mind). Hence, transmission of knowledge, creativity of mind, clarity of thoughts and communication is enhanced during this period. At this time, energy fills space with high level of prana (life energy) available in the atmosphere and this is necessary for body. Though there is no direct Sun light but there is a rise in solar energy which starts reaching us. As solar energy is the main source of creation on earth, therefore, at this time, many cells of our body get signals to perform various physiological activities with utmost efficiency. Moreover, the negative things such as pollution of any kind and other worldly distractions are at its minimum during this period. Our senses for sound, sight, touch and smell are enhanced to grab what is happening around us. All these feelings really boosts us and give us a feel good effect.

We also know that, the macrocosm (cosmos) affects the microcosm (human body) and vice versa. Therefore, we should always align ourselves (biological clock) with macrocosm. Vata is a very active and powerful Dosha but gets affected easily by any positive and negative energy. Therefore, we should increase our energy levels by gaining positive prana through meditation, pranayam and sun salutation in early morning.

How we wake up and at what time we wake up, decides our energy level for the day. Waking up during peaceful time having a lot of positive energy keeps us away from lethargy and dullness. This is one of the reason that waking up after 6 a.m. or late make us feel irritated and lethargic because the period between 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. is of Kapha Dosha which leads to a slow pace. Babies wake up early in the morning naturally. Birds and animals also wake up early because their body is in sync with mother nature. They all wake up at Brahma Muhurta. The most unhealthy living creature on earth is human being who does not even try to tune with the mother nature.

Friends, for those who think getting up daily before 6 a.m. is a difficult task then let me tell you, it is much easier than getting up in Brahma Muhurta. I have noticed significant changes in my life by getting up early in the morning. I have become more conscious to other beings as well as nature and have started thinking in the direction of welfare of the society. It really helped me to understand my emotions and how to tackle them. Another big change, I think I am now more aware of my thoughts which helps me to deal with them in a better way. I am a normal human being but trying to do my karma on the basis of voice of truth. I am becoming a strong believer of Law of Karma. I have reduced my ego and have started accepting people as they are as there is something above this human body.

Brahma Muhurta According to Modern Science

A scientific study stated that late risers are more inactive than early risers.
One possible explanation of this could be the involvement of morning light. To understand this, there is a need to understand few processes such as circadian cycle and biological clock. The circadian rhythms or cycle are physical, mental and behavioral changes that the body goes through in 24 hours with the change in the external environment due to earth's rotation. These are affected by light, darkness and temperature in organisms's environment. Sleeping at night and being awake during the day is an example of light-related circadian cycle. It is found in most living beings i.e., animals, plants, and even tiny microbes.

This cycle is controlled by body's internal clock or biological clock, housed deep within brain. The area in the brain which is charged with keeping time is called Suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), situated right above point in brain where optic nerve fibres cross. This location enables the SCN to receive the cues it needs from light in the environment to help it keep time. SCN is the group of thousand of nerve cells. The light turn on or off genes that control the molecular structure of biological clock. The products of these genes interacts in cells throughout the body. In 2017, Nobel prize in medicine or physiology was awarded to honor of three laureates for their discoveries of molecular mechanisms controlling the circadian rhythm.

Melatonin, a hormone, is responsible for our daily body's cycle. SCN directs the pineal gland for the production of melatonin which make us sleepy. When SCN receive less or no light at night through optic nerves, it signals pineal gland to produce more melatonin to make us feel drowsy or in sleep mode. When sunlight is received by optic nerves, which relay information from eyes to brain, melatonin secretion is inhibited and the brain's awake circuit resumes. In the similar way,  people who get up late, there biological clock becomes more than 24 hours and does not tune with the 24h cycle of earth. This altered biological clock in late risers results in tiredness, impaired alertness, performance, gastrointestinal problems, loss of appetite and inappropriate timing of defecation. Therefore, morning light is necessary to shorten the circadian cycle of biological clock in late risers.

Pineal gland releases melatonin at its highest capacity during Brahma Muhuruta. According to many scientific studies, melatonin is a mood stabilizer and helps to rid away from depression. I was surprised to know that people take melatonin supplements despite the fact that it is naturally produced in our body if we wake up early in the morning. Mood or mind stabilization is necessary to live  spiritual life, so try to get up early and experience the effects of melatonin on our body.

Body clock is also responsible for more than just sleep and wakefulness. Other systems like hunger, mental alertness, stress, heart function, body temperature and immunity also operates in daily rhythm when this gets cue from environment. e.g., the hormone responsible for hunger and metabolism rise and fall over the course of the day. The chemicals involved in immune system also vary. Compounds that induce inflammatory response spike at night and those inhibit rise during the day. This is the reason, fever tend to spike at night. It means, body fights in a better way while at rest. Biological clock gets disrupted by jet lag, change in work shift or use of mobile or electronic equipment in night.

High level and unpolluted oxygen at Brahma Muhuruta blends into hemoglobin to produce oxyhemoglobin that in turn enhances immunity and energy levels. This period has high concentration of ozone element which stabilizes mind and energies fabrics of brain. Endorphins (feel-good hormones) such as serotonin are also at high concentration at this time. Modern science also says that the rate of secretion of life protecting hormone, Cortisol is high in the morning and low in the evening.  Since cortisol helps to withstand the stress and trauma in life thus, the secretion of cortisol results in anti-stress pathway in the body.

Hope this much knowledge will help us to convince ourselves to wake up in early in morning

Early to Bed, Early to Rise make a Man Healthy, Wealthy, Wise

Take Care all of You

Understanding Basic Principles of Ayurveda (Dosha) In Relation To Modern Science

Category: Ayurveda

Hi Beautiful and Peaceful Souls,

When I decided to read the Ashtanga Hridyam, I came to know that before reading this, there is a need to understand the basic principles of Ayurveda i.e., Doshas. Tridosha theory (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) are"Heart" of Ayurveda. During my childhood, my grand mother told us to not eat too much mango in summers, as it will increase pitta. She also used to tell us that kapha is settled in her chest and had pain in her body because of bai (gas). So, when I started reading about Dosha, I came to know that our ancestors had basic knowledge of Dosha and thus they used to eat and behave according to specific time of day and season. For example, she always denies us to eat rice, curd and banana at night. She avoids eating curd and recipes of curd (kadi) during shravan month. She always adds carom seeds in food for lunch. Now, I realized that all these things are related to Doshas. It means, our ancestors were partial doctors. I am not an Ayurvedic Doctor but has done doctorate in Science, so try to put efforts in understanding the scientific basis of Doshas. So, the given information should be considered as discussion only and not a reference.......

Before discussing anything, I want to share one thing, I have seen on various social media platforms people say that we read basics of Ayurveda and follow our diet according to ones prakriti. Although it is good to know our ancient beliefs and follow them as explained in Ayurveda but it is not advisable to follow anything without proper understanding. If you are not a professional in Ayurveda you tend to miss the real picture of our body. So, before staring anything I would advise to consult your Ayurvedic doctor to avoid any complications. Now, Lets come to the point.......

According to Ayurveda, each person is made up of five elements of nature (Panchmahabhutas) i.e., Earth (Prithvi), Air (Vayu), Water (Jala), Fire (Agni), and Space (Akasha). Each person has unique balance of these five elements in varying degrees. This unique balance of elements is known as Doshas. Space represents state of void; Air represents state of gas; Fire represents state of energy; Water represents state of liquid and Earth represents state of solid (4). So,  unique combination of 5 elements in varying degrees is known as Doshas.

Vata: is made up of air (state of gas) and ether (state of void) elements. Thus, Vata is representative of dry air in body. It performs its functions due to its cold and dry nature. We know that air needs space to move and space is given by ether element only. Our entire body is made up of spaces, including space inside and outside cells. This refers to ether element and provides pathway for air element. All other elements of body pitta (hot liquid), kapha (semi-solid substance) and excreta move around body with the help of Vata (dry air). According to Ashtanga Hridyam, Vata locates below the navel (5). It is considered as leader of  three basics principles/functions in body. It is related to mobility,  movement of energy, cell division and any kind of movement in cell, tissue, organs, organs system and organism. It regulates all activities of body physical, mental and physiological e.g., movement of nutrients to cellular level and excretion, distribution of energy, endocrine functions, breathing, blinking of eyes, heart beating, blood and other body fluids flow, movement of joints and thoughts and many more (3). So, the set of all these functions are controlled by Vata Dosha. Behavior of these activities decides the Prakriti of a person. For example, every human being blinks his eyes but some of them blink more frequently while some blink less frequently and others seldom blink. This happens due to difference in vata component in different individuals.

Pitta: is representative of fire (state of energy) and sun in body. It is made up of fire and water (state of liquid) elements. Thus, It represents hot water (bile) in body.  It performs its functions due to hot nature. According to Ashtanag Hridyam, it locates between navel and heart (5). It represents transformation. It regulates digestion, absorption, assimilation, metabolism, appetite, body temperature, skin color, eye's luster, intelligence, emotions, determination, will power, and many more (3). All these functions are controlled by Pitta Dosha. The behavior of these activities will decide prakriti of a person. For example every human being digests food as an activity of Pitta Dosha. However, some people digest it quickly than others who have a moderate to slow digestion .

Kapha: is representative of water or moon in body. It is made up of earth (state of solid) and water (state of liquid) elements. Thus, it represents cold or semi-solid or cementing substance (mucus) in body. It renders its function through its cold and unctuous nature.  This holds cells together and helps in formation of tissues, organs and organ systems and provide lubrication too. It provides growth, strength and immunity to body. According to Ashatanga Hridyam, it locates above heart (3, 5). It regulates structure, immunity and lubrication in body. So, these functions are controlled by Kapha Dosha (3). For example, every individual responds differently to diseases and pathogens. Some have a very strong immunity while others fall ill easily due to weak immunity and there are others who are intermediate of two extremes.

Thus, all human beings possess all three Doshas, but there is dominance of one Dosha which results in a specific prakriti. Prakriti (Human Constitution) is sum total of morphological, physiological and psychological traits in human being. It is decided at the time of conception in intra-uterine life according to predominance of Dosha and can never be changed throughout life (1).

According to Ashtanga Hridyam, if these three Doshas are balanced in state, they provide health but if they are unbalanced then it can ruin our health. If the proportion of Doshas in current state is close to our birth constitution, then our health will be vibrant. So, all three Doshas are present in their natural proportions referred as equilibrium or balanced in state. A divergence between these states, indicate state of imbalance.

Vikruti is used to describe this imbalanced deviation away from prakruti. A particular Dosha is present in greater than normal proportion referred as aggravated and excess or increased state. A particular Dosha is present in less than normal proportion referred as reduced or depleted or decreased state. Of the above discussed states, the increase or aggravated state leads to greater number of imbalances. Imbalances are influenced by many factors, such as diet, lifestyle, external environment, mental states. We are most susceptible to imbalances related to our predominant Dosha. Suppose, I have pitta dominance, so if I will eat spicy food (pitta aggravating food), leads to heartburn (Pitta disorder). Thus, there is need to eat food which are not pitta aggravating (cooling and alkaline food) for me. Therefore, the key is to remember that opposite create balance (8)

According to Ashtanga Hridyam, different Doshas differ in dominance as below:

1. Stages of life:                        Old age: Vata
                                                   Young age: Pitta
                                                   Childhood: Kapha

2.Time of day:                            2 p.m-6 p.m: Vata
                                                     2 a.m-6 a.m: Vata
                                                    10 a.m-2 p.m: Pitta
                                                    10 p.m-2 a.m: Pitta
                                                    6 a.m-10 a.m: Kapha
                                                    6 p.m-10 p.m: Kapha

3. Stages of Digestion:            Last stage of digestion: Vata
                                                 Middle stage of digestion: Pitta
                                                 First stage of digestion: Kapha

Till now, I understood that unique combination of five elements are responsible for specific Doshas. These Doshas are responsible to carry out specific sets of functions/activities of body. The behavior of specific sets of functions/activities are responsible for the formation of specific prakriti. Thus, these five elements of nature should be balanced in body to remain healthy. We should definitely spend time in nature to balance them.

Now, try to understand Doshas by relating them with modern science. I have tried a part of it in my previous blog https://thepureknowledge.blogspot.com/2020/07/ayurveda-protector-and-healer-of-human.htmlEach person has its unique genetic constitution. The physical, mental and physiological characteristics of each individual are based on the quantity and quality of products (proteins) formed by the expression of these genes. This genetic system is constituted by gaining half of the genes from father and half from mother at the time of conception.

We have 46 number of chromosomes (total DNA) which carry genes. The expression of these genes is responsible for all the functions of body. Out of 46, 22 pair of chromosomes are responsible for all the functions of body and are diploid (Present in pairs) while 23rd pair of chromosome is responsible for reproduction. This pair is designated as XY in cells of men and XX in cells of  women. These chromosomes are responsible for formation of germ cells, with X chromosome in women and X and Y chromosomes in men, which helps in reproduction. Thus, germ cells are haploid i.e., 22 number of somatic chromosomes plus 23rd chromosome (23 number of chromosomes). For example, ovum (female reproductive cell) has X chromosome and sperm (male reproductive cell) has either X or Y chromosome along with 22 somatic chromosomes. At the time of conception, sperm cell carrying either X chromosome or Y chromosome unite with ovum cell carrying X chromosomes.  So, 22 number of chromosomes with either X or Y chromosomes of sperm cells enter in the uterus and unite with  23 number of chromosomes of ovum cell of women. The zygote created after fertilization is therefore diploid and contain either a XY (male child) or XX (female child) chromosomes. Therefore, genetic system of child will depend on half DNA (23 chromosomes) from mother's ovum  and half DNA (23 chromosomes) from father's sperm.

In a similar way, embryo gets its share of these Doshas from sperm of father and ovum of mother. Dosha forms constitution of an individual (Prakriti) which will be part of child till its last breathe (2). Doshas form the functional components of body. In state of balance, Doshas are responsible for all functions of body (2). All the functions of cells, tissues, organs, organs system and organisms are controlled by Doshas. e.g., functions of cell membrane, muscles contraction, respiration, digestion, movement of joints, body physique, thought process, behavior and many more.

As mentioned above, the person's physique, psyche, and physiology depends on the formation of the quality and quantity of the product (proteins) by the expression of a single or clusters of genes. So, here we can say that variation in gene expression is responsible for difference in prakriti or Doshas of a population of same race. Many scientific reports have shown the relation of Prakriti and genes. In one research, it was observed that there is variation in the CYP2C19 loci, a gene encoding for drug metabolizing enzymes with persons of different Dosha (prakriti). Person having Pitta prakriti or Pitta Dosha dominance are fast drug metabolisers while others of kapha prakriti or Kapha Dosha dominance are slow drug metabolisers. It means, the variations in CYP2C19 gene expression influences the way of metabolizing the drug by person of different prakriti of same population.

Doshas can be related to the products of housekeeping genes in body. These are the genes which are responsible for basic functions of body and other functions of body are dependent on them. Similarly, Doshas (movement of energy; Vata, bile; Pitta and mucus; Kapha) are the products of some set of genes and are responsible for other functions of body. These set of genes expressed products (Doshas) in all human beings but variation in them results in different quality and quantity of products (Doshas) and leads to different prakriti in same population. For example, a gene responsible for bile (Pitta) is expressed in all human beings but the difference in quality and quantity of bile due to variations in this gene in different human beings of same population results in dominance of particular Doshas and Prakriti. Pitta Prakriti has good digestive system, according to Ayurveda, than kapha and Vata Prakriti. It means, the set of genes responsible of  digestion are expressed in greater quantity in people of pitta than Vata and kapha prakriti. Also there may be variations in these genes in people of different prakriti due to which the quality of product of these genes differs. This may be the reason that Pitta has good digestion than Vata and Kapha Prakriti.  This is my interpretation of how doshas can be related to genetics. This of course needs a lot of scientific research to conclude anything.

Friends, this is how I have understood Doshas with the help of references take from some scientific research papers and some renowned websites which are driven by Ayurvedic doctors. This gathered information really helped me to understand if there is any reference of vata in Ashtanga Hridyam then I can easily understand the context of it. This really helps me to understand the basic rules of Ayurveda i.e., food and behavior should be in line with different times of day and seasons.  Slowly we will learn together about them from the treasure of Ashtanga Hridyam.

Hope, this blog gives an idea of Doshas to you people.

Take Care all of you,

Your's Well wisher

Ashtanga Hridyam: A Detailed Introduction

Category: Ayurveda

Hi Beautiful and Peaceful Souls,

The time when I decided to read ancient texts, the biggest problem was, where should I start from? I was reading randomly and this left me with great confusion. Then I decided to make a chart of ancient texts available at present. I have shared this chart in my blog (https://thepureknowledge.blogspot.com/2020/05/a-classification-and-elaboration-of.html). This chart really helped me to understand the basics of each ancient text and also helped to choose which texts should I read based on my intellect. So keeping this in mind, I decided to write down the details of Ashtanga Hridyam. So that, in future, whenever I share any information from Ashtanga Hridyam you should be aware of what am I talking about. Although, I have given a very brief introduction of Ashtanga Hridyam in my blog (https://thepureknowledge.blogspot.com/2020/07/ayurveda-protector-and-healer-of-human.html). Now, we will discuss it in detail. So, let's start.....

INTRODUCTION

Ashtanga Hridyam, "the essence of all eight branches of Ayurveda" is one of the primary root text of Ayurveda. Ancient literature of Ayurveda is in the form of Brihattrayi (3 major treatises of Ayurveda) and Laghutrayi (3 minor treatises of Ayurveda) and their commentaries. Commentaries are always helpful for better understanding of complex concepts described in ancient texts. Ashtanga Hridyam has the single honor of having highest number of commentaries than any other Ayurveda treatises. Though about 30 commentaries are known (3), most of them are either lost, available partly or remain in manuscripts form in various libraries of India. Only 6 of them are available in print, one complete and remaining in parts. The famous commentaries are Arunadatta's Sarvangasundara (Sanskrit), Chandranandana's Padarthguna Chandrika (Sanskrit) and Hemadaris's Ayurveda Rasayana (Sanskrit). The only commentary available in full and in print form is Sarvangasundara by Arunadatta. Sanketmanjri is also a commentary on Ashtanga Hridyam and a full manuscript is available. It is written by Mr. Damodar  Ranade and remained unnoticed in the history of Ayurveda. Less contributions of this commentary in field of a Ayurveda may have lead to ignorance of this text by scholars of Ayurveda.

Charak, Sushruta Samhita and Ashtanga Hridyam are collectively known as BrihattrayiAmong all Samhita, Ashtanga Hridyam have got a wide acceptance as 3rd major treatise. It is considered as the Heart or essence of Ashtanga Sangraha. Ashtanga Sangraha itself mentions that Ashtanga Sangraha as compilation of work based on Charak (Acharya Aitreya) and Sushruta Samhita (Lord Dhanvantri) (https://thepureknowledge.sharirablogspot.com/2020/07/ayurveda-protector-and-healer-of-human.html). So, Ashtanga Hridyam is a comprehensive text which consist of quotes of Charak, Sushruta Samhita and Asthanga Sangraha.

MAHARISHI VAGBHATA:

Maharishi Vagbhata composed both Ashtanga Sangraha and Asthanga Hridyam in Sanskrit. Though Ashtanga Hridyam has its own significance over Ashtanga Sangraha but it is less prose and poetic in nature. This makes it comprehensive, simple and easy to understand. Acharya Vagbhata was the son of Simhagupta and grand son of Vagbhata. He was born in Sindh. His father and grandfather were Ayurveda scholars. Somewhere, it is mentioned that, he was the disciple of Avlokita. But, others believed that he was disciple of acharya Charak. He was follower of Buddha dharma. Late. Rajiv Dixit ji, said that Vagbhata did inspection on each sutra of previous ayurvedic text (Charak Samhita) for many times. According to acharya Vagbhata, 85% of all diseases can be cured without any consultation with a physician and only 15% diseases require a prescription from medical doctor. Acharya Vagbhata along with acharya Sushruta (Father of Surgery and Plastic Surgery) and acharya Charak (a medical genius)  are considered as "Trinity" of Ayurvedic knowledge, with Vagbhata placed after the other two. There are multiple people famous by the name of Vagbhata, but he is better known as Vagbhata 1 or Vridh Vagbhata.

He gave a message to the society that the Purusharthas (Dharma-moral values; Arth- economic values; Kama- pleasure, love and psychological values) can be attained only by sukhaya (young, free from all physical and mental disorders). So, people who wish to attain Purusarthas should obey the rules of Ayurveda with great respect. He also composed "Rasratan Samuchaya".

DESCRIPTION OF ASHTANGA HRIDYAM:

Ashtanga Hridyam contains about 7120 poetic verses. For the first time, sub types of Kapha Dosha were discussed in it along with vata and pitta doshas and their subtypes. LEGEND OF VAGBHATA AND LORD DHANVANTRI-ORIGIN OF ASHTANGA HRIDYAM:

There is this famous legend related to acharya Vagbhata. It is said that Lord Dhanvantri was curious to know how people would be able to eradicate the diseases and attain good health in Kaliyuga. In order to search for an answer, he decided to find out the most knowledgeable Vaidh (Doctor). To do this, he took the form of a bird and visited all the famous vaidhs of their time and asked three question to everyone. But, none one gave right answer. During this journey in search of an answer, he finally reached to Vaghbhat's courtyard in Sindh region and asked the same questions. Acharya Vaghbhata, despite being busy with his patients could not resist to pay attention to the question from that beautiful bird. Being an intelligent man he realized that this is not an ordinary bird. So, he offered fruits to the bird but it rejected fruits and water and repeated it's question. Vaghbhata understood that the bird would not have anything without getting an answer. He replied:

1. Hitbhuk:       A person who will eat nutritious food suited to time and season
2. Mitbhuk:      A person who will have food in his limits and does not over eat
3. Ashakbhuk: A person who will eat nutritious food according to his Prakriti in limited amount

Lord Dhanvantri was delighted to listen to this answer. He happily accepted fruits and water offered to him and said, "I have roamed around Bharat to search for an able vaidh, now my journey is completed as I have found an Ayurveda expert". He also told Vaghbhata to compose the Ashtanga Hridyam for the welfare of society. This is how the idea and existence of Ashtanga Hridyam was originated. A person is able to remain healthy for the whole life by simple following the routine and life-style mentioned in Ashtanga Hridyam

Eat to live and don't live to eat

Take care all of you,

Your's Sincerely

Ayurveda: Protector and Healer of Human Life

Category: Ayurveda
Hi Beautiful and Peaceful Souls,

Hope all of you are in good spirits. Today I am going to talk about Ayurveda as a protector and healer of human life.

1. INTRODUCTION

Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word which means "Science of Life". English meaning of "Ayu" is "Life or Age". Ayurveda is called "Mother of all Healing". Ayurveda is the oldest of ancient medical system. It talks about right way of living, to avoid and fight diseases. Ayurveda known and practiced today is not even 2-4% of ayurveda that our sages knew.

According to Charak Samhita, Ayurveda is defined as: The Scripture which describes A) about four types of Ayu (Hitayu: physically, mentally spiritually awake; Ahitayu: physically and mentally healthy but spiritually ignorant; Sukhayu: young and free from all physical and mental disorders and Dukhayu: Aged, physically handicapped and suffering from inferiority complex) and B) Differentiation of food and behavior into good and bad for life and longevity on the basis of prakriti, behavior, mind, desire and intellect is called Ayurveda.

Description of four types of Ayu in Hindi  language (https://twitter.com/Sampoorn10/status/1279726811358785536?s=03)

According to Late Sh. Rajiv Dixit (Promoter of Ayurveda), unlike modern medicine Ayurveda works on the root cause rather than symptoms of disease. It is a harmless medicine system as it does not have any side effects on the body. In earlier times, the Ayurvedic knowledge was transferred only through verbal communication between Guru and Shishya. The first written Ayurvedic text is believed to be "Sushurta Tantra" which is known to be available since 2000 BC.

2. ORIGIN AND HISTORY OF AYURVEDA

Ayurveda first existed in universal consciousness (Brahma) before it was passed to mystic sages through meditation. Ayurveda is supposed to be originated in India for more than 5000 years ago. According to Charak Samhita, Ayurveda was "Upanga" of Atharvaved in earlier times. So, Acharaya Charak, Acharya Sushruta, Acharya Kashyap, and Acharya Vagbhata accepted Ayurveda as "Upveda" of Atharvaved. Rishi Kashyap accepted Ayurveda as the "fifth Veda" too. Later, it was also called as "Punyatam Veda" because of it's importance as a "blessing with good health". Please refer to the below flow chart for a detailed chronology of origin of Ayurveda.

3. GREAT ANCIENT  TEXTS OF AYURVEDA

A. Charaka Samhita

Acharya Charak is known as father of Ayurveda. Charak Samhita is the composition of Acharya Charaka which itself is a reformation of older and more voluminous Agnivesha Tantra. The Agnivesha Tantra was composed by Rishi Agnivesha, a student of Acharya Atreya somewhere in 1000 BC. Rishi Agnivesha explained various subjects of Ayurveda in the form of concise quotes. Acharya Charak did the elaboration of these quotes in around 400-200 BC. Later, Acharya Dridhbala added some missing topics in Charak Samhita which was available at around 400 AD. It is considered as the first systematically documented text of Ayurvedic Medicine. Charak Samhita is written in poetry style Sanskrit. It concentrates on branch of Ayurveda called Kayachikitsa (Internal Medicine). It describes basic principles of Ayurveda in relation to various diseases, their diagnosis and treatment. Panchkarma is also a part of it which classifies medicinal herbs on the basis of their action. It has also classified food items according to their properties, preparation method and the form in which it is consumed. It has been classified into 8 chapters in Charak Samhita.

B. Sushruta Samhita

Around 2000 BC, Vriddha Sushrut, a student of lord Dhanvantri (God of Ayurveda) scripted "Sushrut Tantra". This was then revised by Acharya Sushruta in 200 AD who added topics like treatment of war time disease (Sainik Chikitsa) in it. Later, it was called as Sushruta Samhita. It represents the field of Ayurvedic Surgery (Shalya). It is written in both prose and poetry with poetry being dominant. This work was originally written in Sanskrit. It describes various tools and techniques used for surgery along with a greater description of ENT ailments. It also describes various types of poisons, their effects on body and respective antidotes. Acharaya Sushruta performed various surgeries including rhinoplasty (surgery to change shape of nose). That is why he is known as Father of Surgery

C. Astanga Hridayam and Astanga Sangraha

Maharishi Vagbhata composed both these texts. Astanga Sangraha (400 AD) is a combination of Charak Samhita and Sushruta Samhita. It is primarily poetry with prose and includes topics on Internal medicine (Kayachikitsa) as well as surgery (Shalyachikitsa). Astanga Hridyam (400-600 AD) is written in such a manner that can be remembered easily. It is less prose and poetic in nature. It emphasizes mostly on the physiology and therapeutic uses of metals and minerals. Therefore, it concentrates more on the material part of life than its counterparts, Charak and Sushruta Samhita. It is the most followed and practiced book of Ayurveda. Vagbhata classified Ashtanga Hridyam into six chapters.

A part from above, there are other minor texts on Ayurveda such as Kashyap Samhita, Sharngadhara Samhita,  Bhava Prakasha and Madhva Nidanam.

4. EIGHT DIVISIONS OF AYURVEDA

Ayurveda has eight disciplines called as Ashtanga Ayurveda elaborated in Asthanghridyam. These are:

A. Kayachikitsa Tantra (Internal Medicine): Deals in the treatment of common diseases as well as stomach and intestine related diseases. It is mentioned in Charak, Harit and Bhel Samhita.

B. Bhootavidhya or Grihyachikitsa Tantra (Treatment of Psychological Disorders or Demonology): It deals with pshycosomatic disorders and has nothing to do with paranormal activities (as some people might thought because of the name). Recently, there was a lot of controversy around this course being tought in Banaras Hindu University (BHU) with exactly same name. To avoid any misinterpretation, a scholar in BHU has suggested to change the course name to Ayurvedic Pshychiatry. A part from pshycosomatic disorders, it also involves the treatment of diseases with unknown reason. It is mentioned in Charak and Sushruta Samhita.

C. Kumara Bhritya or Baaltantra (Pediatric Treatment): Deals in protection and treatment of children from diseases along with their food and nutrition. It is mentioned in Kashyap, Charak and Sushruta Samhita.

D. Rasayana Tantra or Jarachikitsa (Rejuvenation): Deals with age related disorders and prevention of aging. It describes the preventive medicines that can be taken without diseases. This majorly includes the medicines to boost immunity, intellect and prolonged youthfulness. It is mentioned in Charak Samhita.

E. Vajikarana Tantra or Vrishchikitsa (Aphrodisiac therapy): Deals with  reproductive problems. It is mentioned in Charak and Sushruta Samhita.

F. Shalyachkitsa or Shalya Tantra  (Surgical Treatment): Deals with injury, acid attack or burns. It was used in first war of deva and asura. Ashwini kumaras used this tantra in war to heal wounded soldiers.

G. Shalakaya or Udhvargchikitsa Tantra (Head and Neck Treatment ): Deals with the treatment of ear, nose and throat related disorders. It is mentioned in Charak and Sushruta Samhita.

H. Agada Tantra or Dristhavishchikitsa (Toxicology): Deals with neutralizing of poison due to snakes and insects bite. It is mentioned in Charak and Sushruta Samhita.

5. FAMOUS MODERN AYURVEDA PROMOTERS

Dr. Vasant Lad, Dr. David Frawley (Vamadev Shastri), Dr. Deepak Chopra are some of the more famous among a lot of other people spreading Ayurveda all over the world. In India, research in Ayurveda is undertaken by Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) through a network of national research institutes.

6. AYURGENOMICS:

Friends, if we are reading about Ayurveda, some of you might already have doubts in mind, Is Ayurveda scientific and rational? What does modern science say about it? Shall we use Ayurveda instead of Modern Science? Are there any scientific proofs of the effect of Ayurveda?
Let me try to shed some light on this..
Ayurveda classifies healthy individuals according to three doshas (broadly, energies)—vatapitta and kapha. These doshas combine in varying degrees, with one usually dominant, resulting in an individual’s constitution, or prakriti. This classification system also determines an individual’s predisposition to disease and his or her response to drugs and the environment. For example, vata body type are susceptible to neurological, degenrative, neuromuscular and musculoskeleton disorders more than other body types. Pitta body is more susceptible to digestive disorder, metabolic disorders and inflammatory conditions than other body types. Kapha constitution is more susceptible to low metabolism, block in vessels, channels, high cholesterol, stone in kidney and gall bladder, urinary disorders, metabolic syndrome, obesity and hypothyroidism.

So just think, if we come to know what type of prakriti we have on the basis of genome sequence. This will then help us to know what  disease types we are more prone to and can encounter in future if we do not follow the diet and behave according to our prakriti. Presently, modern science has developed so much but, can we deny the side effects of it? Definitely No, because we give same medicine and treatment to all living beings suffering from a common disease. But according to Ayurveda, each person has a different prakriti and thus gives specific medicines to each person despite having same disease. This is called personalized medicine and that is why, Ayurveda has no side effects.

Therefore, if Ayurveda and modern science work together, i.e., Ayurveda reveals the prakriti of a person on the basis of his/her morphological, physiological and psychological attributes and modern science sequence the genome of persons of three major prakriti? Then, with the help of genome sequence, modern doctors will be able to find out specific prakriti of patients. This will help treat them with the conjugation of Ayurveda and modern medicine. Moreover, modern Doctors after knowing the prakriti of particular person on the basis of genome database, will be able to give consultation to person about the lifestyle, food and behavior need to follow and prevent them from future susceptible diseases. This will definitely reduce side effects and lead to precision medicine.

"Ayurgenomics" is a recently introduced research field which bridges the gap between genomics and Ayurveda and serves as an aid in understanding inter-individual differences in response to therapies in various disease [8]. Now, many well known research institutes and scientists have started studying if the Ayurvedic classification of individuals to prakriti type has any correlation at molecular (Gene) level. And not to any surprise, many findings have shown that yes, there is a correlation between ones Prakriti with over/under expression of certain genes. Therefore, human genome based on ayurveda can provide the genetic basis of three major prakriti. Just to brief you, this is branch of medicine which is focused on designing and creating the medicine and diet specific for each individual based on it's genetic makeup. It gave rise to one of the most talked about and booming idea of modern science called as Personalized/Precision and Preventive Medicine.

It is said that modern medical science is highly advanced and gives better treatment to patients. It is true, it gives better treatment but not healthy treatment. I salute to our ancient ayurvedic acharyas who not only talked about ancient genetic system, but also prevent and treat us on the basis of this system to which modern science is trying to dig into.

Take care all of you,

Your's Sincerely

Purnima Ghai
